The History of Stade Street Garage

Initially the premises in Stade Street comprised a garage at the front of the building with a blacksmith situated at the rear.

Records show that from 1907 it was owned by a Mr Davies, up until 1936 when it was sold to Messrs. Walker & Thompson, with a Mr Tooth as a sleeping partner. They ran the garage and the blacksmiths until 1961, when George Gaskin bought the property. He removed the blacksmiths and built a workshop at the rear of the building.

Mr Lawrence Elam bought Stade Street Garage after moving down from London in 1964 and son, Jon, helped his father in school holidays and weekends from the age of 7 years. Jon joined his father full time at the age of 15 years in 1971.

Philip Elam joined the company in 1975, he left to emigrate to America in 1981.

Daughter Julie joined the family business in 1980 and stayed until 1995.

Stade Street Garage were appointed Standard Triumph Dealers in 1965 holding the franchise until 1969.

Stade Street were appointed the Ford Dealership in 1976 and during the 1980s they were awarded by Ford Motor Company a dealer of distinction , this was only awarded to Ford dealers for excellent service and customer care.

In 1997 Ford Motor Company removed all the small retail dealers. After this, Stade Street Garage then became independent. To this day their service and after-care is still considered exemplary and the Elam family are extremely proud to continue with their customer care.

Jon's wife Karen joined the company in 1989 and continues to maintain the high standard.

The Stade Street site was completely rebuilt in 1990 creating a new state of the art facility. Unfortunately, Mr Lawrence Elam died before the completion of the build, leaving son, Jon, to continue in his father's footsteps. To this day they still have a wonderful name for superb service and after-service.
